The protest continues

The protest in Cahors on 17 April is still on.

Nothing has yet been banned. The wording of any changes to law have not yet been agreed. No law has yet been passed. Sarkozy has not yet said anything.

It is vitally important to show how much we care about this.

Let’s be realistic.

It is likely that the end result will be that exploration WILL be allowed to go ahead in some way, even if just to satisfy the question of ‘is there anything worth extracting?’

We must be aware that the economic carrot is huge. In the current global situation, security of supply is a massive concern. The oil and gas industry will not let go of this unless it proves to be not economically viable.

We have to press for transparency, consultation, local veto, tight regulations. If shale gas and oil are ever to be exploited here let’s make sure that the process is properly controlled. Even if we can limit the current technology of hydraulic fracturing, some bright spark will come up with a new idea. The regulations must be water tight.

We must not take the brakes off now. Remind them of what we really want. Clean, green energy. An environment that we will be proud for our descendants to inherit. A planet that is safe and beautiful.

Say NO to Shale Gas on Sunday 17 April.
